Glebe House Collection
I was very kindly invited to stay at Glebe House, a gorgeous guest house and restaurant in East Devon that wonderfully combines Olive’s eye for art and interiors with Hugo’s exceptional cuisine. With so much inspiration on offer both inside and out, of course I had to pack up my paints and a few canvases, spending two days capturing as much of it as I possibly could.

You’re also more than welcome to make an appointment to come and view the works in my Dartmoor studio.
Oak Tree Drive
The trees on the driveway immediately caught me, and they were the very first thing that I had to paint on my visit to Glebe House. They were like the welcome committee, just starting to bud, though still bare from a distance.
Visiting in late March, the daffodils were out in full force all the way up the driveway underneath them. The bright flowers bring the relief of spring, lifting the spirit.

Great Pen And The Southleigh Hills
East Devon is so different to Dartmoor. There’s a softer, more rolling nature to it and I was enamoured with it straight away.
It’s captivating and poetic not as demanding on the eye.

The Old Kitchen
The Old Kitchen was so soft. The light was anchoring and warm, and reminded me of what was important.
Spending time in the gorgeous Old Kitchen was like being in a painting, but it also ticked off everything you might need; the cosy log burning stove, a deep bath, the deepest pillows I’ve ever met and more teabags than you or I could ever need.

Pooh Corner
So named as it was part of the house where owner Hugo and his siblings used to play as children, Pooh Corner gives you permission to pause and gaze out of the full length window to the green hills of East Devon.
The high contrast red of the dining chairs against the green beyond is what every painter is searching for, paired with the daffodil stems on the table bringing the outside world in.

The Sitting Room
I think Matisse, Picasso and Hockney would have loved it here - it’s a Fauve’s heaven. Just like me, they’re obsessed with colour, pattern, texture and layering; all the elements which are so rich in this grand room.
While the hearth is the centrepiece by night, by day the bay window steals all the attention. I had to spend hours in here, savouring pots of tea between painting, admiring the books stacked high on the table, the striking pink walls and the oversized armchairs which invite you to rest.

The Dining Room
The window felt like a painting itself, framing the East Devon hills in such a gorgeous way.
This place is one big still life set up. The light, the joy, the colour. It’s all here.

Little bedroom
The most important place in the world - it’s easy to see why so many people choose to stay here after their wedding or when celebrating other special occasions.
The many layers of textures and textiles on this bed was glorious – I’d have slept like a dream if I wasn’t so wildly inspired.

Tea Corner
I love to see detail in the important things.
What a welcome. A kettle and heaps of tea bags. I felt calm and settled in straight away.

Every Season They Come Through, And Every Season I Think Of You
The abundant daffodils were the very first thing I saw when we reached the driveway at Glebe, and this sea of daffodils and snowdrops was the last thing I painted on our 24 hour whistle-stop tour.
In fact, I’d just about run out of steam after the first layer, so I finished this piece off in my Dartmoor studio the following week, dreaming of being back among the daffodils.
